Picture Perfect: Top 12 Black Couples in Film

vibe-vixen-sanaa and terrence
Are you anxiously awaiting The Best Man sequel due later this year? In the meantime, co-stars Sanaa Lathan and Terrence Howard will take on another classic.
According to Shadow and Act, they will headline an all-black Caribbean version of Shakespeare classic Macbeth. Retitled Macbett, the film includes Harry Lennix, Evan Ross and Blair Underwood. We’re not sure if Lathan and Howard will play love interests, but it’s got us thinking about past twosomes who have left a lasting impact on black cinema.more after cut....

vibe-vixen-love jones
Darius Lovehall and Nina Mosley (Love Jones)
When sexy poet Darius and gifted photographer Nina meet at Chicago’s fictional hot spot The Sanctuary, these two waste no time getting hot and heavy before realizing they must work on their own issues before uniting. “Say baby, can I be your slave? I got to admit girl, you’re the shit girl. And I’m diggin’ you like a grave.”
Whoo, you can say that again, Larenz!

vibe-vixen-love and basketball
Monica Wright and Quincy McCall (Love & Basketball)
Childhood friends-turned-lovers Monica and Quincy learn to balance basketball and each other in this black classic. Admit it: You teared up at the end when Q said, “Double or nothing.”

vibe-vixen-how stella got her groove back
Stella Payne and Winston Shakespeare (How Stella Got Her Groove Back)
Every woman wanted to be like Stella. She went to Jamaica for a vacation and came back with young boy toy named Winston. Despite a 20-year age difference, these two managed to have a happily ever after.

vibe-vixen-baby boy
Joseph “Jody” Summers and Yvette (Baby Boy)
Hood love is personified by Tyrese and Taraji P. Henson. These two navigate violence, past relationships and inner struggles but eventually commit to each other.

vibe-vixen-jumping the broom
Sabrina Watson and Jason Taylor (Jumping The Broom)
Paula Patton and Laz Alonso are picture perfect as a couple with polar opposite families in this rom-com. Sabrina’s promise to remain celibate until marriage and Jason’s never-ending support are the makings of a near perfect union.

vibe-vixen-why did i get married
Angela Williams and Marcus Williams (Why Did I Get Married?)
There’s only one word to describe this couple: hilarious. Angela loves to nag and Marcus has no choice but to cooperate. All of the baby mama drama in the world can’t keep two of Tyler Perry’s most memorable creations apart.

vibe-vixen-poetic justice movieJustice and Lucky (Poetic Justice)
Like Janet’s box braids, this cult classic is still in style. Tupac ditches his aggressive rapper persona to show his softer side as a single father, winning over Justice, who is still grieving her ex-boyfriend’s death.

vibe-vixen-coming to america
Prince Akeem and Lisa McDowell (Coming To America)
Akeem can’t help but sing after falling head over heels for his Queen from Queens, Lisa. (“Someone to kiss…someone to miiiissss!”) There are too many funny moments in this Eddie Murphy classic to list.

vibe-vixen-deliver us from eva
Raymond “Ray” Adams and Evangeline “Eva” Dandridge (Deliver Us From Eva)
It took an eight-pack and a pair of sexy lips, otherwise known as LL Cool J’s “meat man” role, to win over the icy Eva in this “Taming of the Shrew” adaptation. We love Gabrielle in this take-charge role!

vibe-vixen-carmen jones
Carmen Jones and Joe (Carmen Jones)
A love story that ends in murder, Carmen and Joe’s tangled romance was cutting edge for the 1950′s. This film earned Dorothy Dandridge her first and only Academy Award nomination.

vibe-vixen-ATL
Rashad and New-New/Erin Garrett (ATL)
Come on, you know you wanted to be New-New. The rich girl who faked her way to the wrong side of the tracks won over the blue collar Rashad with her street chic style. Even after unveiling the truth, the two make it work in the end.

vibe-vixen-brown sugar
Andre Ellis and Sidney Shaw (Brown Sugar)
“When did you first fall in love with hip-hop?” This question is answered by the end of Brown Sugar when Dre and Sidney realize they are also in love with each other. We also love Mos Def’s adorable crush on Queen Latifah.
