Continuing the 20th anniversary commemoration of Nas’ Illmatic debut, the rapper’s Time Is Illmatic documentary is set to hit theaters this fall. After its successful run at this year’s Tribeca Film
Festival, the film will bring the story behind Nasir Jones’ prolific first album full circle, featuring commentary from his peers (Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Pharrell), family, and Nas himself.
“We wanted to tell the story of Illmatic as it relates to our generation, something bigger than just the music,” the film's writer/producer Erik Parker told NAZ. “Nas actually spoke for many of us during that time period and he did it in a way that no one else did. And we wanted to make sure that story connected. Outside of just the music.”
A newly-released trailer for Time Is Illmatic finds Nas returning to his native Queensbridge Houses as he reflects on the status of the neighborhood during the inception of his masterpiece. Opening the nearly two-minute clip with Nas spitting lyrics from “The World Is Yours,” the teaser features photos and clips from the rappers early years.
“I gave you what the streets felt like, sounded like, tasted like,” he recalls.
Time Is Illmatic is slated for an Oct. 1 release in conjunction with a tour of the same name. Watch the film’s trailer above.
